Cruise Ship, Lusitania Commemoration, Bank Holiday Festivities

Monday May 6
The Emerald Princess cruise liner sailed into Cobh Harbor early this morning. It is also a bank holiday and the annual Lusitania Commemoration. There are activities throughout the day at the Old Church Cemetery, the Lusitania Memorial, and at Kennedy Park in Cobh City Center.
On May 7, 1915 the Lusitania was enroute from New York to Liverpool. The liner, with 1959 people on board, was 10 miles off the Coast of Kinsale when she was struck by a torpedo from a German submarine. The Lusitania sank in just 300 feet of water. A flotilla of rescue boats were launched and 761 people were saved. The survivors were ferried to Cobh (Queenstown) and were accommodated in local hospitals, lodging houses and private homes. Three days after the sinking, the recovered bodies were buried in mass graves in the Old Church Cemetery, 1 mile north of Cobh.

  1. Who knew Cobh was such a hotbed of excitement! Looks like there's something interesting always going on there. However, remind me never to take a ship that stops off there...seems like they have a habit of sinking!
